How to Stop Hair Loss from Anorexia?

Anorexia nervosa can be defined as an illness of the mind in which people don’t consume enough food to meet their daily nutrient needs, leading them to shed weight quickly while being malnourished. Disorders of eating like Anorexia have long been considered detrimental to individual’s health; there are many individuals suffering from eating problems ranging from Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder etc.

How Does Anorexia Cause Hair Loss?

Anorexic diets tend to be very deficient in nutrients, leading to thin and frail nails and hair as well as eventual hair loss as hair follicles and nail beds fail to receive nourishment. Depleted keratin levels are the key cause behind eating disorders leading to hair loss; without sufficient levels of this vital protein component of hair keratin it begins to shed, thin out and eventually fall out altogether.

Protein depletion, particularly that of keratin proteins, is commonly linked with malnutrition and eating disorders; often leading to hair loss as evidence that the disorder is progressing further. Telogen effluvium is the term medical professionals use to describe this kind of hair loss caused by eating disorders.

Stressful circumstances, such as sudden changes to diet practices, can put our bodies under immense amounts of strain, leading to many hair follicles going into dormancy and eventually leading to their loss. Eating disorders may result in hair loss ranging from subtle thinning and gradual loss to sudden collapse of large quantities at once.

Effects of Anorexia Hair Loss

Loss of hair is a concern that affects many individuals; for some it could have profound repercussions and lead to anxiety and depression. Furthermore, appearances are greatly altered due to hair loss; losing one’s hairline could make someone appear older.

Hair loss has a profound effect on how people view themselves and can cause individuals to become less confident. Although it can occur at any age, males are especially prone to losing their locks as it affects half of all males over 50. As such, efforts have been underway for some time now in an attempt to ease psychological and stigmatizing repercussions associated with men losing their locks.
